My great-grandfather, Isaac Nees, married Sarah Elizaeth Atkins, daughter of Samuel and Rachel Atkins, also of Mason County, at Havana, Mason County, on November 19, 1863.

He bought at least three parcels of land in Townships 20N and 21N in 1863 and 1864. He moved to Jewell Cuonty, KS in 1871 and his wife and five children moved to KS in 1872. They later had six more children.

Isaac was born in Venango Co., PA Nov. 27, 1837 to Samuel and Elizabeth Neese and moved to Warren Co., IL in 1841 and later to Mason Co., according to his obituary.

While there is no record of a Samuel and Elizabeth Neese in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 PA census, nor in the 1850 or 1860 IL census, the 1850 IL census shows Isaac living with Jacob and Jane Nees in Mason Co. when Isaac was 16 years of age.

Jacob and Mary Nees are shown in the 1860 and 1870 IL census as living close to Isaac. Jacob bought four parcels of land in Mason Co. in 1848 and 1849 and I assume he sold them when he left in the early 1870s to join Isaac and fmaily in Kansas. Since Jacob Neese is shown in the 1840 Venango Co., PA census as 30-40 with a male under the age of 5 and no female in the household, I suppose it is possible that he is the father of Isaac or that Isaac's father died and he assumed responsibility for the child.

Given the close tie between Jacob and Isaac in Mason County and also in Kansas, I would think Jacob is his father or uncle. There is one evidence that Samuel and Elizabeth Nees may have existed: they sold 40 acres of land near Havana in Mason County, IL on Feb. 22, 1866, but I can find no record of them in any of the census data for PA or IL.
